Etiology :

Biliary tract disease :
- Gallstones passing into bile duct and lodging in Oddi's sphincter (40% in developed countries)
- Occult microlithiasis
Alcohol (40%) :
- habitual ingestion over 10-15 years
- binge drinking
ERCP :
- especially if manometry of Oddi's sphincter is performed
Drugs (10%) (List of drugs associated with acute pancreatitis)
Trauma
Infection
Hereditary pancreatitis
Hypercalcemia (hyperparathyroidism, Vit D excess, )
Developmental abnormalities of the pancreas (pancreas divisum, annular pancreas )
Hypertriglygliceridemia (>12 mmol/l) on uptodate
- Causes of secondary hypertriglyceridemia :
- Diabetes mellitus types 1 and 2 and type 1 with diabetic ketoacidosis
- Alcohol
- Hypothyroidism
- Hormone supplementation with estrogen or Tamoxifen
- Pregnancy
Connective tissue disease (SLE)
Tumors
Toxins (organophosphate, insecticid, scorpion stings, snake bites)
Surgical procedures (abdominal or cardiopulmonary bypass surgeries causing ischemia to the pancreas)
Vascular abnormalities
Autoimmune pancreatitis
Crohn's dsease
